Lakhimpur AASU burns effigy of Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya

LAKHIMPUR: The activists of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Sunday burnt the effigy of Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya alleging his failure to protect the forest land belonging to Lakhimpur district encroached upon from across the border.

By staging protest programme at Main Chariali of North Lakhimpur town, the organization strongly opposed the Forest Minister's participation in the foundation stone-laying function and plantation programme at Bio-diversity Park (Sahitya Monishi Upaban) at Gumnadi under Kakoi area of Lakhimpur district on Sunday evening in the presence of Lakhimpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), who allegedly failed to protect forest land from the aggression of Arunachali people. The organization also alleged that the DFO was unable to initiate steps to stop the illegal sand-stone mahals rampantly going on at rivers like Singara, Ranganadi, Dikrong of the district.

While staging the protest, North Lakhimpur regional AASU president Pranjit Gogoi became vocal against the failure on the part of the Forest Minister with regard to controlling the corrupted officers of his department. The organization demanded to remove the Lakhimpur DFO from the district.
