Lakhimpur district unit of AJYP honours dhol exponent Somnath Borah Oja

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) on Thursday honoured Somnath Borah Oja, the internationally acclaimed dhol exponent of the State by conferring 'Bihu Samrat' title. While conferring the title, the dhol exponent was feted with a 'Bihuwan', cheleng, a citation, safura, japi, a memento, a Bihu dress and cash of Rs 30,000. The ceremonial programme on the occasion was organized by the organization at Tyagkshetra of North Lakhimpur town during the celebration of its 6th year's Uruka Utsav and Bohag Bihu Adarani programme. Somnath Borah Oja has been honoured with this title as appreciation for his relentless contribution to Bihu culture and dedicated endeavours to preserve the Bihu in its original form.

Notably, Lakhimpur district unit of AJYP celebrated its 6th year's Uruka Utsav and Bohag Bihu Adarani programme on April 13 and April 14. On the first day, the concluding ceremony of the Rongali Bihu workshop was held. It was followed by Mou Kunwori, Xaru Bihuwoti, Dhol badan, and Bor Bihuwoti competitions.

On the second day, Bihu Adarani programme began with a plantation drive inaugurated by adviser Uttam Borah and unfurling of organizational flag by president in-charge Haren Baruah. Swahid tarpan event was conducted by general secretary Mobin Ahmed. Then Rongali Bihu related traditional sports competitions were organized. It was followed by felicitation of senior citizens. During the event, the organization also feted national arm-wrestling champion Kanan Borgohain, and national-level kick-boxer Ahmed Ashraf.

Thereafter, the calendar of the year, published by the organization, was released by social activist Uday Sankar Hazarika. In the same programme, prizes were given away to the winners of the competition events. Participants of the Bor Bihuwoti competition, Indu Borah secured Lakhimpuror Lakhimee-2022 title.
