LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Matak Yuba-Chatra Sanmilan (AAMYCS) has once again reiterated its demand to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Matak community.
In this connection, the members of the organization along with community people, irrespective of age and gender, took to the streets on Thursday in Lakhimpur district and staged three-hour long sit-in in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.
By staging the same protest programme, the organization further demanded to put an end to the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) issue politically by organizing peace talks, to grant adequate amount of funds to the Matak Autonomous Council, to permanently mitigate the flood and erosion problem caused by rivers like the Brahmaputra, Subansiri, Ranganadi, Dikrong, Shingara, Sessa, Dropang in Lakhimpur district, to stop construction of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, to permanently resolve the Assam Arunachal inter-state border dispute, to blacktop the Assam-Arunachal border area road under Bihpuria LAC connecting Sessa-Rajgarh and NH-15 at Bhogpur via Madhupur and to mitigate unemployment problem. During the demonstration, the protesters displayed placards and shouted slogans in support of the demands.
Moreover, the organization submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanding his immediate steps to resolve the issues. In the memorandum, AAMYCS Lakhimpur district president Dulal Konwar, general secretary Dibyajyoti Dutta said, "We have made prayers and petitions several times to grant ST status to the Matak community, for its comprehensive development and to resolve other various issues. But the successive governments had paid no heed to resolve the issues of the Matak community."
