SILCHAR: Adding a new twist in recent Silchar flood, Viswa Hindu Parishad alleged conspiracy of a land mafia racket behind the Bethukandi dyke breach that caused the inundation of almost the entire town.
Addressing a press meet, leaders of Silchar unit of VHP and Bajrang Dal said, the dyke was breached with the sole motive of grabbing the land of Mohishabeel, the huge wasteland. Alleging the police inaction was intentional, Mithun Nath, secretary of VHP said, the motive of the land mafia was clear, they wanted the water of Mohisabeel to be drained out to Barak river so that they could grab the land of the wasteland. Shantanu Naik, president of the south east chapter of Viswa Hindu Parishad pointed fingers at Water Resources and Irrigation departments along with police.
He said, the case regarding the dyke breach was registered after 29 days of filing the FIR as police did nothing to find out the culprits. It was after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's stern stance, Cachar police swung into action and arrested four persons within 48 hours. "Then why the police sat idle after the FIR was lodged? Who instructed them to sit idle? Why the Water Resources or Irrigation departments remained completely inactive after the dyke was found to be damaged," the VHP leaders asked. They said, after the unprecedented deluge causing massive damage to the properties of a huge number of people, these two departments initiated the repairing of the dyke as well as of the half done sluice gate only after strict instruction from none other than the Chief Minister himself. Naik said, a major portion of Water Resources department staff was irresponsible towards their job.
Government should close down these two departments as they proved themselves non-performing over the years. In clear terms Naik said, Water Resources and Irrigation departments were responsible for the recent flood which caused huge loss to the people of Silchar. District administration also failed miserably to take necessary steps in due time, he further alleged.
