Guwahati: Devastating storms and lightning that have struck various parts of Assam has wreaked havoc across the state. It has led to numerous casualties and has resulted in the loss of livelihoods for many.
As per the data of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), at least 18 people have lost their lives in the month of April due to these natural calamities.
Houses and other infrastructure have also had to incur damages due to harsh weather conditions.
The state has been recipient of incessant rainfall which is accompanied by heavy thunderstorms since the beginning of April, thereby causing widespread devastation across the state.
According to the update provided by the ASDMA bulletin, three persons were killed by lightning on April 29 in Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Dhubri districts. Lightning and storms has taken the lives of 14 people within a span of three days since April 15. The ASDMA report also informed that at least two minors died as a result.
Furthermore, the ASDMA bulletin said that as many as 4,630 people in 325 villages have been affected by torrential rain and storms over the last three days. More than 1,000 houses were mutilated during the month along with several schools and Anganwadi centres.
The ASDMA bulletin concluded by saying that Electric poles and trees had also been rooted out in many parts, snapping power supply and blocking roads.
Meanwhile, a 28-year old youth died after being hit by lightning at Borbaruah in Dibrugarh on the night of April 29. The deceased had been identified as Madhurjya Konwar, a resident of Jamira Gohain Gaon of Borbaruah area of Dibrugarh.
According to reports, Madhurjya Konwar was riding a motorcycle and suddenly he was struck by lightning while he was on his way towards Bogibeel bridge. The incident occurred at around 8pm near Bogibeel area.
