LAKHIMPUR: The Boginadi regional unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has alleged low quality execution of work with regard to implementation of Subansiti embankment protection, strengthening schemes adopted by NHPC in order to safeguard the riverine people from the possible danger apprehended to be caused by adverse effects of the controversial Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project being constructed at Gerukamukh.

Notably, NHPC has implemented some embankment strengthening schemes at several stretches of the Subansiri embankments at present. The Boginadi regional unit of AJYCP has alleged that the implementation of the scheme concerned at the two-kilometre long stretch of the Subansiri left embankment from Singari to Gorumar is of very poor quality. According to the organization, the newly constructed stretch of the embankment of that place is lower than the height of the old embankment. "The embankment is not constructed at that place by maintaining the height it should be," said Nitul Saikia, the general secretary of the Boginadi regional unit of the AJYCP in a written statement.

"Moreover, the soil, to fill the geo-bags to install on the embankment, has been dug just by the side of the embankment, as a result of which the apprehension of erosion looms large in the upcoming days," the organization further alleged in the statement.

Regarding the alleged issues, the organization submitted a memorandum to Sumit Sattawan, the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur on Friday. Through the memorandum, signed by Boginadi regional unit of AJYCP president Sarat Borah, general secretary Nitul Saikia, the organization demanded the Deputy commissioner to monitor the implementation of the schemes in order to safeguard the riverine people from the adverse impact of the controversial mega river dam.
