Mae-Dam-Mae-Phi celebrated in Moran

The Tai-Ahom community's most important festival, Mae-Dam-Mae-Phi was organised by All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), Khowang with a day-long programme

Moran: Mae-Dam-Mae-Phi, the most important festival of the Tai Ahom community was held in Moran with lot of enthusiasm and sobriety. Rich tributes were paid to the ancestors as per traditions and all rituals were followed a the celebrations on Sunday.

The festival was celebrated with a full day programme at Khowang Rongchali near Moran.

The celebrations were organised by All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), Khowang Regional Committee in collaboration with the locals. The celebrations began with flag hoisting in the morning followed by prayers being offered to the ancestors. The Dam-phi Puja was held in keeping with the traditions.

"Various programmes took place during the celebration of Mae-Dam-Mae-Phi. Flag hoisting ceremony took place at 7 in the morning. We prayed and paid tributes to our ancestors and martyrs who sacrificed their lives," an organiser of the celebrations said.

ATASU memebrs also reiterated their demand for ST status and hoped that this will be fulfilled soon. "We will pray to our ancestors. We will also pray for a healthy and stronger society. We also look forward for development," one of the ATASU member said.

Another member of the committee said, "The historic Mae-Dam-Mae-Phi organised by ATASU and Khowang Regional Committee is praying for the well-being of the entire state. We pray to our ancestors through this festival. We also warn the government to fulfill our demands as soon as possible."

Drawing competitions, various cultural programmes and meetings were held as part of the celebrations.

Mae-Dam-Mae-Phi was celebrated across Assam on Sunday. Two major events were organised in Guwahati's Hatigaon and Hengerabari areas as part of the celebrations.
