Magisterial inquiry ordered into killing of contractor in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: The Additional District Magistrate Tinsukia has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the killing of a catering contractor - Sunil Mandal of Dibrugarh who was stabbed to death outside a hotel premises during a marriage party on the intervening night of December 9 and December 10. The scuffle between hotel security guards and catering staff resulted to grievous injury to three other catering staff.

The Hotel Sapphire located at Chiwrapatty reportedly stockpiled huge quantity of liquor during marriage party though the Hotel did not possess bar licence. The incident occurred after party was over and the owner of the hotel SashiChoudhury asked the catering staff including a woman to leave the hotel. While most of guests were allegedly drunk, the security guards in inebriated state misbehaved with the catering staff and thrown their belongings outside the hotel which led to altercation. Though the local populace made complaints to district administration on several occasions about midnight menace, no action was initiated, alleged Chiwrapatty Devi Mandir committee. The committee member also demanded that the hotel should be closed as it violated norms.

NiluramSarma assistant commissioner and executive magistrate will conduct the inquiry and he has been asked to submit the report along with views and findings within 7 days. It is alleged by locals that immediately after magisterial inquiry was ordered, the Tinsukia Municipality engaged several vehicles to lift empty liquor bottles from the hotel premises. While the police ought to have sealed the hotel following the incident, the alleged role of state excise department was also noted in the magisterial order after large quantity of illegal liquor was found in the hotel as reported by media.
