MANGALDAI: A long-felt dream of the people of Kalaigaon in Udalguri district has finally been transformed into the reality, that too on the auspicious occasion of the 150th Gandhi Jayanti, with the unveiling of the life-size statue of the Father of the Nation in a

day-long programme. Kali Charan Barua of Borangabari in Gohpur, the youngest brother of Swahid Kanaklata Barua, in a traditional way unveiled the statue in presence of a large gathering at the premises of the PWD Inspection Bungalow on Wednesday.

To mark the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, a largely-attended public meeting was also organized with legislator Maheswar Boro in the chair. Taking part in the function, Kali Charan Barua offered his tribute to the Father of the Nation and to all the swahids who offered their supreme sacrifice. He also offered his gratitude to the freedom

fighters of the country. President of Boro Sahitya Sabha, Taren Boro, while taking part in the function as a guest of honour, released the souvenir Mahatma, published by the organizing committee to mark the celebration.

“Terrorism is more dangerous than extremism and corruption is more deadlier than terrorism. Mahatma Gandhi always opposed extremism, terrorism and corruption. He had the dream for ‘Ram Rajya’ which would be free from all corruption. But contrary to the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, every moment in today’s India is gripped by rampant corruption which has crippled common life. It is high time that we all should stand united against all sorts of corruption only to strengthen the very foundation of our country,” said Boro Sahitya Sabha president Taren Boro in his speech. Synchronizing with the celebration, Axam Xahitya Xabha president Dr. Paramananda Rajbongshi released a book titled Sil Beparir Atmo Kotha, Asom Andolan: Kararuddha Jiban aru Eto Sito authored by former AASU activist Hiren Saharia on the historic six-yearslong Assam Movement.

The Assam Movement originated from Kalaigaon and Hiren Saharia, who was actively involved in it very closely, has penned the untold stories of Assam Movement with reference to the involvement of the people of Kalaigaon in it. Ashok Publication of Guwahati has published the book.
