SILCHAR: Silchar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday touched one of its much sought-after milestones with the successful brain surgery. The premier medical institution, though completed its golden jubilee a few years back, lagged behind in its basic infrastructure like neuro department. With the appointment of Dr. Sambuddha Dhar, a neuro surgeon previously working in Benaras, the SMCH had now its own neuro surgery segment. Dr Dhar, on Thursday, successfully removed a tumour, reportedly malignant from the brain of a patient, whose identity the SMCH had kept undisclosed on ethical ground.

"This is the first brain tumour surgery in the history of Silchar Medical College and Hospital," informed Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, Principal and Chief Superintendent of Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Demand for some basic departments like neuro surgery, cardiology with cath lab, urology, nephrology in SMCH was long due. Expert neuro surgeon or cardiologist could be roped in. However with the initiative of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dr Bezbaruah, the long due demands now seem to be fulfilled.

It is to be noted that the State Cabinet on September 1, 2021, approved the proposal to appoint Dr. Dhar as a consultant. Since then, he has performed 26 surgeries in Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

"I have spoken with the surgeon concerned and the medical team. It is a joyous moment for all of us that SMCH has performed the first brain tumour surgery in its history. However, the patient is still in ICU and given the seriousness of the surgery, it is too early to celebrate," asserted Silchar MP. Dr Rajdeep Roy.
