GUWAHATI: The government of Assam has recently made a major reshuffle at the Department of P&RD (Panchayat and Rural Development) in the state.

As per the major reshuffle, two Joint Directors of the Assam's P&RD department have been newly appointed as the Joint Commissioner of the department.

The two Joint Directors who are now given the designation as the Joint Commissioner of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department are Mriganka Choudhury and Chinmoy Prakash Phookan.

In addition to this, Bipanchi Dutta who is the Deputy Director of the P&RD Dept has been newly appointed as the Assistant Commissioner of P&RD.

Earlier on Tuesday 8 February, the contractual workers appointed under Assam's P&RD department staged a sit-in protest demanding solutions to the problems faced by the contractual employees.

The contract workers staged a protest in development blocks located in Golaghat and also announced numerous agitations.

The employees appointed under PNRD on a contractual basis are deprived of their rights as informed by the members of All Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Contractual Employees council.

These workers have been serving in different Development Blocks and Gaon Panchayat in various posts like Gram Panchayat Co-coordinator, Computer Assistant, Programme Manager and others but they are not receiving a proper monthly salary. Because of the less salary, the contractual employees have to deal with many issues in running their families.

The representatives of the council also repeatedly met the senior officials of P&RD in this regard seeking the required solutions to the problems but every time they fail to get any positive response.

The members of the council then announced continuous strikes starting from 1 February to 7 February leaving their work.

The contractual workers made various demands throughout the strike that includes job security for 60 years, all government benefits for contract workers, preparation of ROP for employees, implementation of the policy of equal pay for equal work.

The long 7 days protest by workers has highly affected the regular normal service in the P&RD department in all districts of the state including Jorhat, Bongaigaon and Morigaon.
