DOOMDOOMA: The 12th death anniversary of Mamoni Raisom Goswami, winner of Sahitya Academy and Jnanpith award, was observed by Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha on Wednesday with President Bimala Baruah in the chair. In the beginning Arjun Baruah, former president, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, lit the ceremonial lamp in front of her picture followed by Jyoti Sangeet which was presented by Dabasmita Chaudhury.

Attending the function as chief speaker Hiron Baishya Dutta, head of the department of Hindi, Doomdooma College, dwelt at length on the life and achievements of litterateur Goswami. Mentioning about her autobiography ‘Aadha Lekha Dastabej’ she said that we get to read very few autobiographies written by Assamese women writers. ‘In this book Mamoni Raisom Goswami made some startling revelations about her early days at Guwahati and Shillong. Primarily she suffered from depression since her childhood and somehow survived many suicidal attempts. Yet she started writing from early days while still at school and soon made her mark as a writer. After the tragic death of her husband she again took to writing and theme of most of her novels was based on the plight of the dispossessed,” she said.

The meeting was also addressed by journalist Dhiren Deka, social activist Arjun Baruah, former headmistress Nirala Chaudhury and president of Ramdhenu Mohila Chora Dibyalata Deka. The whole proceeding which was anchored by secretary Deben Deka came to an end after presidential remark offered by Bimala Baruah.
