Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia hopeful about President’ visit to Pothorughat

MANGALDAI: Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia is hopeful about President of India, Draupadi Murmu’s visit to Pothorughat- the land of the historic Pothorughat peasants’ uprising in the Darrang district.

“I am hopeful that during the next tour to Assam, President Draupadi Murmu will visit Pothorughat since the President has shown a keen interest in the subject and asked me to remind her ahead of her next tour to Assam,” said Dilip Saikia while sharing his fruitful experience of meeting the President at Rastrapati Bhawan on August 9, with a request to her to visit the historic place.

While acknowledging the felicitation in public by premier media organization Mangaldai Media Circle (MMC) at Youth Club here on Monday evening, in recognition of his recent initiative in carrying forward the matter before the President of India for the first time since Independence, Parliamentarian Saikia further said that the meeting with the President in a bid to draw her attention to the glorious but ignored chapter of India’s freedom struggle turned out to be very successful as the President acknowledged the efforts of the four-member delegation in bringing the historic event to the national level.

President Murmu advised the MP to share with her the available list of the ‘Krishak Swahids’. The President has already forwarded the request of Mangaldai Media Circle for a national memorial to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of India with a copy to the media organization. MP Saikia added that the initiative to bring the historic issue to the national level had concluded and now it was time to strongly establish it at the national level through united efforts of all sections of the society so that the new generation get inspired by the story of the highest degree of patriotism and communal brotherhood. He appealed to the public present to get prepared to welcome the President of India to Pothorughat.

In the function, MMC also accorded felicitation to Sipajhar legislator Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi for his strong supportive role in the noble initiative led by Parliamentarian Saikia. The function, attended by former Mangaldai MLA Gurujyoti Das , Vice Chairperson of Assam State Women Commission, Nilima Devi, Principal of Mangaldai College, Dr Kamala Kanta Borah, Chairman of Mangaldai Development Authority, Pratap Bordoloi, president of Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce, Mukul Ch Deka and leading citizens also witnessed felicitation to Darrang District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey for receiving the first Bhoomi Sanman award-2023 from the President of India for achieving outstanding results in the technological land reform system in the district.

The function, anchored by MMC president, Bhargab Kumar Das earlier began with the lighting of ceremonial lamp in deep tribute to Mahapurush Madhab Dev followed by a Borgeet.
