KOKRAJHAR: Inter-Church Women Peace Committee of lower Assam representing Christian Women of all denominations of lower Assam gathered at Kokrajhar Government HS&PM School field in Kokrajhar on Wednesday evening for with theme, ‘Solidarity Prayer and Candlelight vigil for Manipur’ so that peace returns in the state. It was successfully organized from 4 PM to 7 PM where hundreds of Christian women of lower Assam said that Manipur is in their hearts and they love the people of Manipur.
The programme included four types of prayers. Silent prayer was led by Rev. Anireka Mochahary, NELC, Bongaigaon Diocese, Chain prayer was led by Sister Pusphalata Tanti, Women Coordinator, Diocese of Bongaigaon and Mass prayer was led by Guneswary Narzary, Bodo Evangelical Lutheran Church while, candlelight prayer was led Rev. Binasri Kujur, Oraon Baptist Church Association of Assam.
Three distinguished speakers shared short message during this prayer. Rt. Rev. Bishop Thomas Pulloppillil from Catholic Church, Diocese of Bongaigaon shared a short message who extended great thanks to all women gathered for their solidarity with people of Manipur. He appreciated the efforts that the government (both Centre and State) have made to shun the violence.
Raimali Muchahary, a social activist, one of the advisors of ICWPC, expressed her deep sorrow over the increasingly horrifying incidents of violence, loss of human lives, of places of worship and property. “As women we condemn the parading of women naked, raping them and murdering them. We mourn the loss of several innocent lives. Our hearts bleed for those suffering and languishing in the camps without hope. In every conflict, riot or communal, women and children always become victims. Why are they so vulnerable in our society today? Is there anything wrong in our society in shaping our children or making them good citizens?” she said.
Sonamani Murmu, former Principal of Bible School, also expressed her deep concern and love for the people of Manipur. She called all women gathered to have faith in God and continue to pray for peace in Manipur.
The prayer concluded with benediction by the Deputy Bishop of NELC, Bongaigaon Diocese. This solidarity prayer and candlelight vigil programme was attended by more than 3,000 women along with Bishops, Clergy, Pastors and many other local leaders.
