SARUPATHAR: The Railways on Friday conducted an eviction drive in Sarupathar under the Golaghat district and successfully cleared the first phase of illegal structures, including shops and residences. As many as 17 families and 71 shops were evicted during the drive. The drive was jointly conducted by the Railways and the administration of the Dhansiri subdivision.
Meanwhile, the evicted families and noted citizens of Sarupathar town have requested the subdivision administration and the Railway authorities to halt the eviction drive till Magh Bihu as the encroachers "promised to move away on their own and at their own cost after Magh Bihu".
On the other hand, the Railway officials informed that the illegal structures were evicted as part of their engineering work for double lane railway track. "We have evicted and cleared the first phase of illegal constructions in the land belonging to Indian Railways," said an official.

Circle Officer Hemanga Nobis, Din Cangfa Boruah, SDO (c) of Dhansiri subdivision, and jawans of the Railway Police Force (RPF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and local police were present in full force to carry out the eviction drive.
