SILCHAR: Cachar district administration had issued notice to all the vendors to vacate the footpath they had 'illegally' occupied. To ease the traffic congestion, the administration was all set to start a massive eviction drive, a source said on Wednesday.

Upgrading Silchar municipal board to a corporation was under process, but the recent spate of heavy traffic congestion on all the busy roads of the town had posed a challenge for the policymakers. The ruling party delegates had recently discussed the issue with the administration and police authorities. Against this backdrop, the district administration had been empowered to take necessary steps to control the chronic traffic problems of the town in an all-party meeting. Almost all the speakers expressed their views to remove the street-side shops and also the shifting of parking slots in the different places of the town.

Participating in the meeting, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty said that efforts were being made to use the road from the west side of Normal School to Chirukandi as an alternative road to control traffic congestion in Tarapur area. Besides, the road from Capital Point to Railgate No. 2 of Tarapur would also be widened, Chakraborty said.

SP Ramandeep Kaur said that temporary dividers could be installed on the main roads of the city if required. Rickshaws were plying in the city. The e-rickshaws coming from outside the city caused this traffic jam. Autorickshaw organizations were also informed at the meeting that their autos were plying in the city through 36 parking points of the city but some buses of State Transport Department were plying from Devdut ASTC station causing traffic jam in the city.
