Massive fire in Jorhat, 20 houses gutted

The fire caused extensive damage to the people of the area. Several fire tenders from nearby areas have been rushed to douse the fire

Jorhat: Amid the Chhath puja celebration, a massive fire broke out in Meshtpati Harijan colony in Jorhat. As many as 20 houses were burnt down in the massive blaze.

The incident took place around 5-5.30 am while most of the families were celebrating Chhath puja at the Puja ghat.

Fire tenders from Jorhat, Titabar, Teok, Marioni have reached the spot to douse the fire.

The fire is yet to be completely extinguished.

The terrible incident caused extensive damage to the area. No injuries reported yet.

A resident of the area said, "I was sleeping and suddenly I heard some annoying noise so I came out of my room when I saw my neighbor's house is on fire, I immediately made the others aware of the incident and they all rushed to the spot."

Another resident said, "It happened when we were in Puja ghat, the house was empty. It burnt almost everything in the house, clothes, gold jewellery, money, books, and much more stuff."

The victims have demanded that the government do something about the extensive damage caused.
