LAKHIMPUR: Demanding the scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union once again rocked Lakhimpur on Friday evening. The organization initiated massive torchlight rally in North Lakhimpur town vehemently opposing the much controversial Act and declaring their determinative stand not to silence until the Act was scrapped.
Lakhimpur AASU initiated the agitation program along with thirty ethnic organizations as a part of second phase stir initiated and declared by the central committee of the organization in order to oppose the CAA. Hundreds of common and senior citizens of the district spontaneously joined in the program to register their protest against the Act. The protesters rocked the environment by shouting slogans to scrap the Act and to slam the BJP-led governments in the Centre and in the State. They also shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their alleged arrogant, adamant support in favor of the Act which is considered to be a tremendous threat to Assam from various aspects.
Leading the protest programme, Lakhimpur AASU president Pulok Jyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta severely criticized all these political leaders.
“Sarbananda Sonowal is afraid of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, but the people of Assam are not afraid of Sarbananda Sonowal. No dominating, divisive policies adopted by the State and Union governments can silence the anti-CAA agitation until the Act is scrapped. This should be understood by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Sarbananda Sonowal at the earliest,” stated Dhanmoni Dutta.
Notably, the Dhakuakhana regional units of AASU and the thirty ethnic organizations demonstrated the same stir in Dhakuakhana town in association with the common people.
