Mastermind Behind Forging Himanta Biswa Sarma's Signature Arrested In Delhi

The man Imran Shah Chowdhury had allegedly forged Himanta Biswa Sarma’s signature and siphoned off a sum of Rs. 3 crore from a government contract

GUWAHATI: A man, who had allegedly pocketed a huge amount of money from a government contract by using a forged signature of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was arrested from Delhi on Sunday.

The arrested man Imran Shah Chowdhury, who hails from Lakshmi Nagar area in Guwahati, had allegedly forged Himanta Biswa Sarma's signature and siphoned off a sum of Rs. 3 crore from a government contract under the Jal Jeevan Mission. A few more persons were involved with Imran in this alleged crime. Imran is believed to be the mastermind in this case.

Till now, six persons have been apprehended in connection with the case. They were identified as Yemini Mohan, Binit Poddar, Rajib Kalita, Pankaj Gogoi and Deepjyoti Dutta. All the persons, except Rajib Kalita, were arrested from Demow in Dhemaji district last Wednesday. The matter is being investigated further by police.

The Assam police has apparently launched a crusade to exterminate all kinds of crimes from the state ever since Himanta Biswa Sarma became the chief minister of the state. Operations have been carried out by law enforcement agencies and miscreants apprehended in the past two to three months in connection with various crimes. Many suspected criminals have been injured and killed too, after they tried escaping from police custody.

In August, an arms smuggler was gunned down by police in Karimganj district after the smuggler tried to flee from their custody. The deceased smuggler Nurul Islam was arrested by police and border security force jawans a few days before the incident. Four pistols and mazagines and a pen pistol were recovered from his possession.

In the first week of August, a man who was arrested with heroin, gold and cash, was critically injured after police fired on when he tried escaping from their custody. The incident had taken place in Kamrup Metropolitan district.
