Digboi: Sundar Rao and Tankeswar Roy, two men who work at the CISF camp in Digboi, Assam. These men are not high-ranking officials nor do they earn a hefty salary. But they have hearts of gold. These two men could not bear the hunger and misery of the beggars and homeless people on the streets of Digboi.

Sundar and Tankeswar decided to cook whatever they can and feed all the beggars and homeless people on the streets of Digboi. Given their meagre earnings, they have not been able to spread out a lavish meal for these hungry, needy people but the duo is making sure that they do not go hungry. They have been serving food to these people for over 14 days now.

We come here every day. We are feeding these people whatever little we can," Sundar Rao said.

Because of the COVID lockdown restrictions life has become miserable for most of the beggars and homeless not just in Digboi but other parts of Assam and the country. Several clubs, organisations, religious bodies and even individuals and families have come out to help these people in this hour of need and crisis.

As per the 2011 census, Assam has a maximum 22,116 number of beggars while Mizoram has the least number of 53 beggars among all northeastern states.
