Meeting held on segregation of Bodo folk dance and Kherai dance and music

A special meet on the finalization of the segregation between Bodo folk dance and Kherai dance and music was held under the aegis of Dularai Boro Harimu Afad (DBHA) at the PWD guest house here on Monday.

KOKRAJHAR: A special meet on the finalization of the segregation between Bodo folk dance and Kherai dance and music was held under the aegis of Dularai Boro Harimu Afad (DBHA) at the PWD guest house here on Monday.

Chaired by the president of DBHA, Jogeswar Brahma, prominent personalities connected with Bodo culture, experts, research scholars and artistes attended the special meeting on Bodo folk dance, Kherai dance and folk music.

In his speech, the Head of the Department of Bodo folklore, Gauhati University, Dr. Anil Boro said there had been deep influence of the ritual of Bathou in the Kherai dance of the Bodos. He said most of the dance and music of Kherai had originated from Bathou and there was need of guidance from research scholars and experts. He also said there should be fair study and research on folk and Kherai dance as well as folk music.

Boro said that mudra was of utmost important in the classical form of folk dance. He also suggested that the DBHA should take all possible initiatives for error-free segregation of Bodo folk and Kherai dance and music before finalizing it to be included in the varsity syllabus.

Advisor of the DBHA, Rohendra Brahma, who is also a singer, lyricist and film producer, said the DBHA had been working for finalization of Bodo folk dance, folk music and Kherai dance through opinion, research papers of scholars and workshop on theories. He said the notation on Bodo music and segregation of classical and folk had been finalized and included in the syllabus of the university curriculum up to the fourth semester.

Brahma said was no song other than music in Kherai dance for which the DBHA faced difficulty in studying and recreating the song form of Kherai. He also said the notation kham (big drum) of the Bodos was very clear and scientific and familiar with other advanced classical forms.

The president of the DBHA, Jogeswar Brahma said they had discussed with the leaders and saints of Bathou for research on the songs of Bathou as well as its music. Since Kherai dance and music had originated from Bathou, there was deep ritual of the religion, he said, adding that the time was crucial for giving final shape to Bodo folk dance, Kherai dance and folk music.
