Meeting on HIV, AIDS and Tuberculosis Eradication held in Golaghat

An important district level meeting on HIV/AIDS was held recently at Doctor’s Club, Golaghat, in collaboration with Golaghat District Health Committee and District AIDS Control Committee.

GOLAGHAT: An important district level meeting on HIV/AIDS was held recently at Doctor's Club, Golaghat, in collaboration with Golaghat District Health Committee and District AIDS Control Committee. The meeting was chaired by Senior Physician Dr Hiren Shaikia. Deputy Commissioner Mrigesh Narayan Barua said in his speech that HIV or AIDS does not mean the end of life.

He emphasized the need to spread awareness about AIDS to schools and colleges. Noting that the district administration has always been with the people living with HIV or AIDS in the district, he said that times have changed and modern medical science has created many new possibilities.

Taking part in the programme, District and Sessions Judge Binod Kumar Chandak said that the HIV/AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2016 and the notification issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare in the current year would address the issue of HIV/AIDS.

He said the law protects people living with HIV/AIDS as well as those in charge of caring for such people from any discrimination. Speaking on the occasion, Assam State Legal Services Authority Member Secretary Nayan Sankar Barua said that people who have been discriminated against for HIV or AIDS as well as others can avail free legal aid from the District Legal Services Authority. He advised setting up legal aid cells for people living with HIV/AIDS in the district.

He also suggested that the District Legal Services Authority should be expanded and disseminated as much as possible so that the poor and the needy of the society could get justice.
