SHILLONG: The authorities recovered three dead bodies from the under-construction Institute of Science and Bio-Research located in Umsawli of Meghalaya on the evening of Sunday. The three victims were identified as people who were working in the institution.

Two of the three victims were identified as cleaners working for the institution while the third was identified as a watchman for the same. Two of them were male while the third was female. Although the reasons for the death have not been known comprehensively, the police have suspected that the consumption of poisonous mushrooms was the possible cause of death for the three people.

The contractor working on the project had alerted the local police on a basis of a very foul smell coming from one of the rooms located on the first floor of the building. The police team arrived at the location and broke open the door of the room in the presence of the local village headman and other eyewitnesses. They recovered the bodies and sent the same for the necessary post-mortem process.

The police also found a pot with cooked mushrooms in one of the rooms in the institution. On preliminary investigation, it was found that two of the victims visited the nearby forest on Thursday in search of mushrooms to eat. And the same is now believed to be the cause of the deaths.
