Meghalaya: Heroin Worth Rs 28 Cr Seized

Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment of narcotics had reached Meghalaya from Manipur, via Mizoram.

SHILLONG: Security forces have been able to capture a massive consignment of Heroin in the state. The consignment was captured during an operation carried out by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

The operation was carried out by the authorities of the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya in the Maweyngkneng locality. And it led to the capture of a total of 3.099 kilos of heroin and the market value of the same is estimated to be around Rs 27.94 Cr. A suspected dealer of narcotics was also arrested during this operation.

According to the authorities, the narcotics are believed to have been smuggled through the porous India-Myanmar border as the preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment had reached Meghalaya from Manipur, via Mizoram. The narcotics were found conceded in a total of 307 soap boxes.

In a previous incident, Assam police have been able to capture drugs worth Rs 10 Crs in the city of Silchar. Acting based on specific inputs, a combined team of Cachar Police and Karimganj Police conducted a special operation. The operation took place in the Sincoorie Road locality in the city of Silchar. The officials were able to recover a total of 100 soap cases loaded with narcotics. On proper checking, they were found to contain a total of 1.4 kilos of heroin.

The police also arrested 33 years old Shaheed Ahmed, a resident of the Puwamara locality of Karimganj in regard to the incident. And the total value of the narcotics is said to be around Rs 10 Cr in the market. Superintendent of Police, Cachar district, Numal Mahatta informed that the huge consignment of narcotics came from the Champai district of Mizoram into Assam and was supposed to be moved to the other states of the country. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985 with regard to the incident.
