LAKHIMPUR: The members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Wednesday initiated a protest programme across the Lakhimpur district against the State Government’s decision to teach Mathematics and Science in English in vernacular medium schools from Class 6 onwards.
In this connection, the regional committees under the Lakhimpur district unit of the organization staged fast in their respective jurisdiction. The North Lakhimpur regional committee staged the protest programme at the Swahid Bedi premises of North Lakhimpur town. Leading the protest programme, president Pinku Bordoloi and general secretary Abhijit Buragohain slammed the Government of Assam for taking the decision, which is allegedly destructive to the Assamese language and the mother languages of the indigenous communities of Assam. They reiterated that the decision of the government to teach Mathematics and Science in English from Class 6 is detrimental to the growth of Assamese, Bodo and other local languages, adding that AASU would never accept this decision. They demanded the Government of Assam to withdraw the decision at the earliest.
