Mid-Day Meal Employees' Union stages protest in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the country, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Mid-Day Meal Employees' Union initiated massive protest programme in Lakhimpur demanding government employee status to the mid-day meal workers of the government school.

In support of the demand, the organization staged dharna in North Lakhimpur town, in addition to taking out a protest rally. At first, the protesters, led by president Monima Saikia and secretary Ranu Mili, assembled at Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimapur town and held a protest meeting there. Then they took out the protest rally to the Samagra Siksha Mission office covering the town. The protesters rocked the environment shouting slogans in support of their demands.

By staging the same protest programmes, the organization further demanded the State Government to hike their remuneration up to Rs. 7,500 from Rs. 1,000, to pay the remuneration every month of the year, to withdraw the decision of privatizing the implementation of mid-day meal scheme, to amend the Labour Act which is against the interest of the labourers and to grant pension, medical aids, including other social justice measures, to the mid-day meal employees. The organization submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in support of the demands.
