Minister Ashok Singhal takes stock of progress of schemes in Lakhimpur

Ashok Singhal, Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Irrigation, said that providing adequate benefits to farmers through irrigation schemes is the primary priority of the incumbent Government of Assam.

LAKHIMPUR: Ashok Singhal, Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Irrigation, said that providing adequate benefits to farmers through irrigation schemes is the primary priority of the incumbent Government of Assam. He also said that commercialization in agricultural products and enhancement of commercial sector can pave an effective way for the progress of the State. The minister said so in Lakhimpur while visiting the district for official programmes.

Notably, Ashok Singhal visited Lakhimpur district on Thursday with a day-long programme. During the visit to the district, the minister conducted field visit to several irrigation schemes being implemented in Naoboicha and Bihpuria LACs and took stock of their progress and present status. He spent the Wednesday night in NHPC guest house at Gerukamukh after completing his visit to the Dhemaji district. He arrived in Lakhimpur on Thursday morning and then inspected the Naharpukhuri Children’s Park being constructed in North Lakhimpur town. He was accompanied by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka. He said that a natural environment is essentially required for the all-round development of children and appreciated Manab Deka’s effort to beautifully decorate the children park.

Then the minister visited Laluk Baligaon and Bogolijan under Naoboicha LAC to study the prospect of the irrigation projects on the bank of two rivers. From Laluk, Singhal arrived at Bihpuria and laid the foundation stone for the construction of the proposed market shed with sophisticated facilities under Bihpuria Municipal Board. Then he inaugurated a commercial complex set up at Ward No. 3 (A) under Narayanpur Municipal Board.

On the other hand, Singhal studied the potential of irrigation projects at various places under Bihpuria LAC and instructed the departmental officers to implement effective projects at the inspected villages. He held detailed discussion with the local people and departmental officers over the prospects of irrigation projects at Badati Jamuguri in River Dikrong, Bonpuroi Jamuguri Irrigation Project in River Subansiri and Badati Jamuguri Deep Well Scheme after inspecting them. During the field visit, the minister was accompanied by Bihpuria MLA Dr Amiya Kumar Deka, Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Sumit Sattawan, Housing and Urban Affairs and Irrigation Department Secretary Pavitra Ram Khaond and officers and engineers of both departments.

In the evening, Singhal held a review meeting in the conference hall of Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner’s office over irrigation projects of the district and took stock of their current status. He also held a review meeting over the schemes implemented under Narayanpur and Bihpuria Municipal Boards. He instructed the officers and civic body representatives to build adequate system for waste management, tax collection and to resolve other issues of the civic body areas.
