Minister Ashok Singhal visits Lakhimpur; Street Vendors' Association submits memo

LAKHIMPUR: Minister for the Department of Housing & Urban Affairs and Irrigation, Ashok Singhal visited Lakhimpur district on Wednesday. During the visit, the minister called on a number of beneficiaries of various government schemes.

He met Orunodai Scheme beneficiary Anima Pawe of Pahumora Dhuya Gaon under Naoboicha LAC, Atal Amrit Abhiyan beneficiary Monima Pachani of Ward No. 14 of North Lakhimpur town, COVID Relief Scheme beneficiary Mahabir Prashad Sarmah of Thakurbari of North Lakhimpur town, Widow Pension Scheme beneficiary Dipali Dutta Hazarika of Hindu Gaon of North Lakhimpur town, PMAY (Urban) beneficiary Dipak Kumar Gogoi of Ward No. 4 of North Lakhimpur town, Old Age Pension Scheme beneficiary Bogen Sonowal of Nalanichuk under Dhakuakhana LAC by going to their homes.

He further called on Tosheswar Sonowal, the victim of the Assam Anti-Foreigners Movement, who is bed-ridden at present due to ailments at his home located at Nalanichuk. He extended a package of Rs. 20,000 to him for his treatment. Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka extended a wheelchair to him. Interacting with the media persons, Ashok Singhal said that some irrigation schemes with high investment would be implemented in Lakhimpur very soon for the benefits of the farmers' community.

On the other hand, the Lakhimpur district unit of Street Vendors' Association of Assam (ASVA) submitted a memorandum to the minister demanding the permanent resolution of various problems faced by the street vendors of the district. Through the memorandum, the organization urged him to cease the eviction drive taken to remove the street vendors by following the verdict of the Supreme Court until and unless they are rehabilitated, to extend one-time financial package to the street vendors in view of the adverse effects of COVID-19 pandemic, to take steps to concrete the vending zones set up at four wards of North Lakhimpur town, to rehabilitate the street vendors taking the land shown in Town Vending Committee meeting on liege temporarily, to take steps to expedite the banks to release the PM SVANidhi loans, to take steps to provide Ayushman card to each street vendor and to allot fund for the construction the CD Road Market Complex.
