LAKHIMPUR: Water Resources-cum-Public Relation and Information Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika visited Lakhimpur district with a day-long programme on Wednesday.

During the visit, the minister inspected the erosion-affected right embankment of River Subansiri at Ghancharai under Telahi Development Block and took stock of the ongoing works executed to protect the critically deplorable embankment. During the course of the inspection, the minister was accompanied by Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, MLA Manab Deka, Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan and officers of the Water Resources Department, Lakhimpur Division. There he interacted with the local and erosion-affected people and said that the department concerned would adopt all measures to protect the embankment.

"A project worth Rs 10 crore was implemented to control the erosion caused by River Subansiri in this place and the implementation of the project progressed by 10 per cent. But the implementation of the project had to be stopped due to rising water level of the river. So, only the embankment repair work is underway at present. When the water level of the river will subside, the implementation of the sanctioned project will be resumed," stated the minister. He expressed confidence that the Water Resources Department would be potent enough to protect the embankment.

During the visit to the district, Pijush Hazarika also inspected the Sissi-Tekeliphuta embankment of the mighty Brahmaputra at Takarsuk under Dhakuakhana subdivision, located in the Lakhimpur-Majuli boundary area. Notably, this embankment is considered to be the safeguard of Dhakuakhana subdivision and Majuli district. There the minister took stock of the progress of the implementation of the erosion prevention measures executed with the investment of a fund amounting to Rs 10 crore. He said that permanent erosion control measures would be implemented in that area step by step to check the devastating erosion caused by mighty Brahmaputra.

While interacting with the media persons, Pijush Hazarika welcomed the Union Government's initiative to ban the PFI (Popular Front India). "PFI should be banned not only for five years, but forever. It is the patron of internal insurgency, jihadi activities in India," the minister said. On the other hand, Pijush Hazarika put forward his support for mega river dam projects during the interaction.
