BARPETA: The 'Guardian Minister' of Barpeta District and Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass launched the 'Chief Minister's COVID-19 Widows Support Scheme' at a function held at the Conference Hall of the DC here on Saturday.

During this programme, each of the 32 beneficiaries was handed over a cheque of Rs 2.5 lakh as one-time financial assistance.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister said that though the government cannot compensate for the loss of a loved one, yet the one-time financial assistance would help to mitigate financial hardships of the widows to some extent and help them to lead a life of dignity.

Dass also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for always being a pioneer in envisioning welfare schemes. "Those women whose husbands have died due to Covid-19 are entitled for availing benefits under this scheme. However, the widow must be from low-income group and the annual income of the family must be below Rs. 5 lakh. The 'Chief Minister's Widow Support Scheme' comes close on the heels of the launch of the 'Sishu Seva Scheme' where financial assistance is provided to children who have lost their parents due to COVID-19. The objective of this scheme is to secure the future of such children and also to enable them to complete their education without facing any adversity, informed Bikash Sarma, DIPRO (District Information & Public Relations Officer), Barpeta.

The Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, Tej Prasad Bhusal in his welcome address gave a curtain-raiser of the scheme and praised the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues for undertaking such humanitarian steps.
