GOALPARA: The All Assam Miya Parishad sparked fresh controversies by inaugurating a Miya Museum in the Goalpara district of Assam on Sunday. This step created several reactions from different sections of the public in the state.
The inauguration of the establishment faces severe criticism from BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev. According to a report, he told that this Miya Museum should be taken down immediately He also said that he won't allow the existence of the Miya Museum in Assam as the Miya community will never accept the Assamese Culture.
The Miya Museum was opened to the public on Sunday. It is located in the Lakhipur in Dapkarvita in the Goalpara district of the state of Assam. It aims to preserve the culture and heritage of a minor section of people residing in the state. The small setup has old items related to the Miya community on display for all visitors. Apparently, these have been used by the community since a very old time.
The inauguration event was attended by hundreds of members of the Miya community as well as invited guests and officials of the All AssamMiya Parishad among the dignitaries.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously rejected a proposal of former Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed. He has proposed the of setting up a Miya Museum in Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra in the year 2020. And this proposal from Sherman Ali Ahmed had even stirred many debates in Assam for a very long time.
In a letter to the Director of Museums on October 18, Ahmed also sought the establishment of a museum at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra to showcase the culture and heritage of the people living in the char-chaporis regions of the state. He also referred to the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Art and Culture presented to the 126-member Assembly on March 24.
