Guwahati: Assam Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed has been suspended from the party by the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Bhupen Kumar Borah for "repeatedly violating party discipline".

Sherman Ali Ahmed is a three-time MLA from the Baghbar Assembly constituency in the Barpeta district. He was a member of the All India Democratic United Front before he contested on Congress tickets in 2016 and 2021.

This was informed in an order issued by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee dated October 3, 2021.

The order read, "Hon'ble President APCC Sri Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended Sri Sherman Ali Ahmed MLA, member ACLP from Congress Party with immediate effect for repeatedly violating party discipline."

This development was made after MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed was arrested by the Assam police for his controversial statements on eight Assamese youths, who were killed in February 1983 during the Assam Agitation, on Saturday.

Ahmed had sparked controversy after he said that the eight people who died during the 1983 violence in Chalkhowa in Darrang district were not "martyrs" but "killers" as many others from the Miya (Bengali-speaking Muslim) community. A video clip that had recorded this statement of the MLA has been doing rounds and has triggered the sentiments of many. This statement was made in response to the violence that erupted in the Sipajhar area between the protestors of the Assam Agitation and the "immigrant" community. He defended the Miya community by claiming that the eight Assamese youth were killed by the Miyas in order to "save themselves."

The Assam police have informed that Sherman Ali Ahmed is currently undergoing interrogation. They added that many FIRs have been registered against Ahmed.
