MLA Sherman Ali Remanded To Two-Day Police Custody

When the police produced him before the court, they had sought 10-day of custody but the court had granted two days of custody.

Guwahati: The court has sent Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali to two days of police custody for allegedly making "communal and provocative" remarks.

When the police produced him before the court, they had sought 10-day of custody but the court had granted two days of custody.

Sherman Ali's lawyer has requested the court to make arrangements for medical treatment as he is suffering from diabetes and cardiology.

The case (No. 520/21) has been filed under Section 153/153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code against Sherman Ali at Panbazar police station.

Besides, another case (No. 3598/21) was filed against Sherman at Dispur police station under Sections 153/153 (A), 294/500 of the IPC.

The third police complaint (No. 406/21) was lodged with Geetanagar police station in Guwahati.

Panbazar Police arrested the MLA from his residence which is MLA hostel on Saturday.

After the recent Gorukhuti incident, Sherman Ali Ahmed made some comments against the martyrs of the Assam Agitation. The remarks from the MLA stirred up the hornets' nest in the state, leading to the lodging of FIRs against him by various organizations in different police stations in the state. The police today arrested him based on all those FIRs.

The APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee), on Friday, issued a show-cause notice to Baghbar legislator of the party, Sherman Ali Ahmed on his recent controversial statements about Assam agitation martyrs. The show cause notice was served as "it has been observed by the AICC (All India Congress Committee) and also the APCC that despite holding a responsible position as an MLA of the Congress Party you have time and again given statements in media and in public forum against party policies and matters with communal overtones having great propensity to destroy the social harmony of our state.
