Momentous Milestone in India's OIL History: Khagorijan Oilfields to Recommence Functioning

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the ceremonial event and left for Rohmoria from the city of Guwahati to mark this historic landmark on a short-term helipad.

Notably, 4 wells were drilled after oil was discovered in the area in Nov 1998 and production started in Dec 2004, including Khagorijan located 1.8 km from the Brahmaputra, however, operations were suspended in Nov 2007 due to administrative & environmental issues.

As per reports, the Assam CM is also going to begin the foundation stone of the construction work for two anti-erosion projects in the area. Dr Sarma is likely to declare a package for the ones who had succumbed to losing their agricultural fields and lands due to the continued last two decade's destruction.

Meanwhile, the CM also laid the foundation stone for SDRF schemes for restoration of flood damage worth ₹7.50 cr from Liting Gaon to Rohmoria Gaon & for SOPD schemes worth ₹8.50 cr from HS School to Baratichuk.

Further, Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also handed over ₹4 lakh each to the next of kin of 3 Rohmoria boat accident victims.

Notably, the GoA will sanction an additional ₹16.13 cr to complete the construction of the entire embankment at Rohmoria, of which 80% of work is complete. Directed WR Dept to ensure quality work using advanced technology.

Rameswar Teli, Indian Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Binod Hazarika, MLA in Lahowal are going to attend the occasion to mark the remarkable milestone in the history of OIL India company. OIL Directors Manas Sarma and Pankaj Goswami, and Resident Chief Executive of OIL Prasanta Borkakoty will also be present at the significant event.

The company discovered the oilfields in Khagorijan in the year 1998 followed by its production initially from three wells in the year 2004. In the beginning, the collective production from the oil wells was over 110 kiloliters each day.

As soon as the company was enforced to cease its actions in November 2007, with the agitation and opposition from the locals being fierce, the production reached conclude with around 42 kilolitres.

Earlier in February 2022, ONGC stated that it would resume its oilfield functioning on the debated Assam-Nagaland dividing line with the Indian Home Ministry moving in to sort out the controversial dispute between the two state governments. Ajay Bhalla, the secretary of the Union Home Ministry held talks between the two states regarding which Nagaland's response is being awaited.
