More Than 120kms Waterways To Be Excavated In Assam

MoPSW has sanctioned Rs 204.47 crore for execution of the project.

GUWAHATI: In a recent development, Sarbananda Sonowal, the current Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) affirms that the significant accord signed among Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), a sovereign unit under MoPSW along with Dredging Corporation of India will excavate over 120kms of waterways in the state of Assam. 

The massive waterways in Assam would facilitate in maintaining fairway, in an all weather condition, and it would also focus on even transit and movement of ships and other water vehicles. It is worth mentioning here that, and amount of Rs 204.47 crore has been sanctioned by MoPSW for the mentioned project and firm execution of the same. 

The accord dates till the year 2026, however, it can get increased depending upon the necessity. As per reports, varied stretches will stretch out in river Brahmaputra, Dhansiri, Kopili along with Barak river in order to unseal value of Inland Waterways Transportation in the state. 

While talking about the matter, Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday stated that, under the leader of PM Narendra Modi, the state administration is adopting all sort necessary regulations to bring about basic LAD for smooth passage of vessels and ferries around the year. This particular accord will offer a boost to green mode of transportation in the state, which is comparatively affordable as well as efficient, the minister added. 

This particular step by the government will also enhance the economic potential of Assam. "With the successful movement of huge cargo and world's longest river cruise, Ganga Vilas, the sustained LAD (least available depth) in waterways of Assam will accelerate and strengthen business viability, trade and unveil chance for the people of the region," Sarbananda Sonowal stated further. 

On 13th of January, 2023, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ganga Vilas from Varanasi.
