LAKHIMPUR: After the execution of its senior leader Lachit Hazarika alias Salim Ali by banned organization United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), a gloomy environment has engulfed his family. Following the news of his execution, sensation prevails in his birthplace Lakhimpur district and mixed reaction still continues across the district. The family members of Lachit Hazarika have expressed strong resentment against the banned organization for killing him.

Notably, almost two days ago, news spread that a top ULFA-I leader, Lachit Hazarika alias brigadier Salim Ali was awarded capital punishment by the organization in Myanmar’s Sagain area in Hachi camp on September 20. Along with him another female cadre, who hailed from Tinsukia, was also served the death penalty by the armed militant group. Report claimed that Lachit Hazarika was close to ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah and he joined the outfit in the 1990s while Bornali joined the outfit in 2021.

On Tuesday, ULFA-I claimed responsibility for executing the two senior leaders for allegedly conspiring against the group. According to the banned organization, the leaders were found guilty of violating norms and were given the death sentence. In a statement sent to the media through an e-mail ULFA-I, said that the senior cadres identified as Lachit Hazarika alias Salim Ali and Barnali Asom alias Nayanmoni Chetia were found guilty of violating norms.

In the meantime, the Assam Police have asked ULFA-I for the location of the bodies to bring them back home. Similarly, Indira Bhorali and Biren Bhorali, the bereaved mother and younger brother of Lachit Hazarika respectively, demanded ULFA-I to give them the body of the executed ULFA-I leader. The 85-year-old mother along with other family members are shocked with the news of the execution of Lachit Hazarika.

Lachit Bhorali alias Lachit Hazarika alias Salim Ali was the second son of Kalia Bhorali and Indira Bhorali, residents of Sandahkhowa under Bihpuria Police Station of Lakhimpur district. Lachit joined ULFA in 1991, when he was a third year BA student at Bihpuria College. Since then, the family has had no contact with Lachit for 33 years. The family had to tolerate severe harassment during the Army operation against ULFA and pass their days under miserable conditions. Under such conditions, Lachit’s younger brother Biren Bhorali had to give up studies. Due to pecuniary difficulties, the members of Lachit’s family had to shift to Bongalmora where they are residing currently.

Lachit was charged to be one of the prime accused in the sensational Dhemaji bomb blast incident, which took place on August 15, 2004 and he was proclaimed absconding since then.
