GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a direction to the Assam and Meghalaya governments, along with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, to submit a detailed final action taken report in the Mukroh firing tragedy.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) had filed a case against the states of Assam and Meghalaya with the NHRC in November 2022, through its National Spokesperson Saket Gokhale, after the tragic and reprehensible incident in which Assam police shot and killed five civilians and one forest guard in a retaliatory attack in Mukroh village of Meghalaya.
Following this, orders had been issued by the NHRC to the states of Assam and Meghalaya, along with one to the Govt of India, on February 21, to submit a status report regarding the investigation into the matter of the Mukroh incident.
The Joint Secretary of Meghalaya’s Home (Political) department had submitted a report on March 6, in which it was stated that the Magisterial Enquiry Report on the firing incident of the Mukroh Village is under the scrutiny of state government and the one-man Commission appointed for the purpose. It was also explained that the time period for examination of the report has been extended for another two months.
Following this, the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement on March 23, in which it was stated that a meeting was convened with Chief Secretaries of Assam and Meghalaya on November 18, 2022 and the Assam Government was requested to finalize and enforce the SoP and take necessary measures to avoid the use of lethal weapons against the civilians, as well as miscreants.
The current status report on this contentious issue is still being awaited.
TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale said in a statement that the inordinate delay in providing justice to the victims of the Mukroh firing is shameful and reflects the utter disregard of the governments of Assam and Meghalaya towards the lives of tribal communities of Meghalaya,.
“It is shocking that the report of the one-man Commission instituted by the Meghalaya government is still pending and that the deadline has conveniently been shifted by another 2 months,” he added.
