Murder accused dies in 'police custody' under Dolamara police station

HOWRAGHAT: Alleged custodial death of a murder accused, Bharot Sautal in Dolamara police station of Bokajan subdivision, Karbi Anglong district has sent shockwaves in the area. According to police, the accused committed suicide in police custody.

Bharot Sautal was arrested by the local police after he allegedly killed a 12-year-old ,Dhananjay Mirdha at Dolamara Bagan on the night of November 19 in the house of the victim. After arrest, he was kept under police supervision in Dolamara police station and a case was registered against him under relevant sections of IPC.

After the incident, the investigating Executive Magistrate of Bokajan, Bhaskar Kalita told media persons that as per preliminary investigation, Bharot took his life inside the lock-up by strangulating himself with the cord of his underwear. However, the actual cause of death can only be confirmed after the official inquiry process concludes. The magistrate also said that an investigation had been ordered to uncover the circumstances under which the accused died.

Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police of Karbi Anglong, Indranil Barua, who is supervising the departmental investigation, told the media that Bharot was not handcuffed when the tea garden workers caught him on Friday, that is the day after he committed the crime.
