'Mwdai Gahai' felicitated for bagging Sahitya Akademi award for Bodo poetry

Various social organizations and individuals of Udalguri and Darrang districts have expressed deep satisfaction immediately on receipt of the news of announcement for conferring the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award for Bodo poetry collection to poet of high repute, Medical Officer and a former legislator of Udalguri, Dr. Deva Kanta Ramchiary, popularly known for his pen name ‘Mwdai Gahai’.

MANGALDAI: Various social organizations and individuals of Udalguri and Darrang districts have expressed deep satisfaction immediately on receipt of the news of announcement for conferring the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award for Bodo poetry collection to poet of high repute, Medical Officer and a former legislator of Udalguri, Dr. Deva Kanta Ramchiary, popularly known for his pen name 'Mwdai Gahai'.

A large number of admirers and well wishers of Dr. Ramchiary immediately rushed to his residence at Rowta Chariali and greeted him with phulam Bihuwan and Aronai. He has been awarded for his book of poetry in Bodo language Khar sayabo aro Himalaya.

Born to the family of farmer Sabha Ram Ramchiary and Sonari Ramchiary of village Baramchari in Bojali district as the fifth son in 1963, Dr Ramchiary completed his primary education from Baramchari MV School, matriculation from Kamrup Janata High School in 1978 higher secondary from Kokrajhar HS School in 1981 and later completed his graduation in Medical Science from Gauhati Medical College. In 1990, he came to Rowta and rendered his service as a private practitioner and became very popular among the rural people irrespective of religion or caste and tied the nuptial knot with Nirmali Ramchiary.

In 1996, he was elected as the Member of Assam Legislative Assembly from Udalguri LAC projected by People's Democratic Front. Later, he left active politics and returned to his service as a private medical practitioner in Rowta.

During his student life he was highly attracted by the leftist movement and started penning his thoughts and ideas in the form of poetry. Known as a good orator, Dr. Ramchiary also got the opportunity to address an international forum in Geneva. Till date he has authored 10 books on poetry in Bodo language, besides several other books in English, Hindi and in Assamese languages. Presently he has been rendering his sincere service as a Medical Officer at Rowta Model Hospital.

Education Minister and his classmate Dr. Ranoj Kumar Pegu, Sootea legislator Padma Hazarika, Bodo Sahitya Sabha president Taren Boro, ABSU president Dipen Boro, Udalguri district committee of AASU, ABSU and AJYCP also congratulated Dr. Ramchiary.

On Thursday evening, senior media person Bhargab Kumar Das and social activist Naba Kumar Deka met 'Mwdai Gahai' at his residence at Rowta and offered hearty congratulation with a phulam Bihuwan.
