Nagaon Police constable Lakheswar Hazarika succumbs to COVID-19

Lakheshwar Hazarika has become the fifth casualty; earlier, five Assam Police personnel had succumbed to the COVID-19 infection

Guwahati: 55-year-old Nagaon police constable Lakheswar Hazarika became the sixth COVID-19 related casualty in the Assam police force when he expired at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday, August 7.

"We are saddened to inform that Constable Lakheswar Hazarika of Nagaon Police made the supreme sacrifice in the fight against #COVID_19. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Those who passed away fighting #Corona, continue inspiring us to serve the people even better", the Nagaon police force posted from its official Twitter handle late at night on Friday, condoling LakheswarHazarika's demise.

"On 28 July, he (Lakheswar Hazarika) complained of feeling unwell. He was tested at the Nagaon Civil Hospital and he tested positive. However, his condition started deteriorating fast and he was eventually referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on August 4. Despite the GMCH doctors' best efforts, they were unable to revive him. He passed away at 7:30 PM in the evening", a Nagaon police official told The Sentinel Digital.

As on Friday, the Assam Police has registered a total of 2078 COVID-19 positive cases, informed additional director general of police (ADGP), G P Singh. However, 1495 personnel have recovered and many of them have already resumed their duties.

"August 6th2020 – @assampolice 2078 personnel have tested positive to date. 1495 have recovered. Unfortunately, we've lost five colleagues till date," GP Singh wrote in a tweet on Friday evening.
