Nandita Saikia Murder Case: Lawyers' Association To Not Defend Accused Rintu Sharma

GUWAHATI: Nandita Saikia's murder case is perhaps known to everyone in Assam. A degree student at Moridhal College in Dhemaji district, Nandita was stabbed with a sharp weapon by a youth recently for rejecting his marriage proposal.

Nandita, who got critically injured in the attack, eventually succumbed to her injuries earlier this week at a hospital, where she was admitted after the incident with her. The youth, who was identified as Rintu Sharma, was arrested by police.

The news of the girl spread like a wildfire on social media with netizens venting their ire and seeking capital punishment for the accused. Meanwhile, the Dhemaji Lawyers' Association (DLA) has expressed its fury over the attack on the girl and taken the decision to not advocate for the murder accused Rintu Sharma.

The Association has said it is very upset over the murder of a brilliant student and decided that no lawyer of the association will defend Sharma in this case.

The state government directed Special Director General of Police GP Singh on Thursday to expedite the investigation of the case to ensure exemplary punishment to the culprit.

The Assam cabinet, which met on Thursday, expressed its deep sorrow over the incident and also took the decision of transferring the case to a fast-track court for a speedy trial.
