GUWAHATI: Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday said he is confident that Bharatiya Janata Party will win the upcoming Assam Assembly Polls due to pro-incumbency sentiments of the state.
Tomar, who is BJP's election in-charge of upcoming state elections was in Guwahati to launch the mobile app 'My BJP'.
Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Minister Tomar said, "Due to pro-incumbency, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win Assam Assembly polls and form the government in the state again. We will meet every voter on the voter list and understand their minds and for this particular thing we shouldn't waste any time and reach every voter".
The app was launched at a party meeting in attendance of State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, BJP national vice-president Baijayant Jay Panda, BJP general secretary and MP Dilip Saikia.
The Union Agriculture Minister further said it was a good sign that Assam was favouring the saffron party. He said, "Instead of anti-incumbency, pro-incumbency is being seen in Assam. This is a very good sign for the BJP and I am hopeful that the BJP will succeed in forming the government again."
Tomar further added that the people of Assam have witnessed corruption and lack of development before the BJP came into power, and which has since been rectified by the party. He said, "People of Assam have witnessed what was happening 5 years ago. Corruption was at the peak, development was far from sight, and the law and order situation was bad."
The incumbent party is pulling all stops in the run-up to the polls. According to reports, the party has made plans to visit every family in each of the booths through a program titled Pariyal Samparka Abhiyaan (Connecting to the Families). BJP party members and workers will meet each and every voter in each polling station in person.
During the launch program, Narendra Singh Tomar addressed the party workers and asked BJP workers to make all possible efforts to double the number of votes cast in the last election.
State BJP president Ranjit Das asked the party workers to work harder to achieve the BJP's target of 100+ seats.
Minister Tomar also spoke about the BJP's recent loss in the Punjab Civic Body Polls. He said that it was not correct to link the party's defeat in Punjab's municipal polls with the farmers' agitation as the party had a falling out with the Shiromani Akali Dal. He said, "It is inappropriate to link the result of municipal corporation polls in Punjab with farmers' agitation. We were weak in Punjab and used to fight polls in alliance with Akali Dal. But we fought separately this time, which caused losses to us."
The Minister also said the Assam state government, under Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal's leadership, has been pushing for development in its five-year tenure. He further added that under the leadership of Chief Minister Sonowal and NEDA convener Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state is now on the path of development and progress. He further added that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has fulfilled all the expectations of the people. BJP will be able to win 100+ seats very easily.
The Union Agriculture Minister also noted that alliances for the upcoming polls are yet to be decided. He said that alliance partners and seat-sharing arrangements with them will be finalised by the central leadership with discussion with the state office-bearers.
The state Assembly elections are likely to be held in April/May 2021, though announcements have not been made so far.
