JAMUGURIHAT: The Assam government has taken strong steps to curb criminal activities and protect the young generation from the scourge of drugs. Many drug traffickers were arrested, and many involved in this trade have been killed in encounters by Assam police so far.

The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) of Assam has sent a letter on the need for HIV testing, which is a deadly cause of AIDS infection. In a statement sent to the newspaper through State Media Officer Mrinmay Kumar Nath, the State President of NHRCCB, Nishant Thard, said that the Assam government’s campaign to make Assam a drug-free state with the active role of the Assam Police has certainly brought hope to the state. However, there is a loophole in this regard, said the president of NHRCCB. He further said that many of the main antisocial persons relating to this cycle have not yet come to light or been identified.

The NHRCCB expressed confidence in the police department and administration of the state and said that the Assam Police and administration have a special status in the context of India, and hence, the government should take a very active role in eradicating drug trafficking. The organization has sent a letter to the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reflecting on the matter. The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) has also advocated making HIV testing compulsory in hospitals in Assam. The president of NHRCCB said the possibility of transmission of the deadly disease among the prisoners in the state has caused concern among the conscious community. The organization has also requested that the health department of the state government take action in this regard and make HIV testing compulsory for prisoners of the state.
