National Mathematics Day observed in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: National Mathematics Day, to mark the birth anniversary of Srinivas Ramanujan was observed at Lakhimpur Commerce College on Thursday in North Lakhimpur.

Born on December 22, 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was a legendary mathematician whose contribution in the field led to resolution of many unsolved theorems. His birthday is celebrated as National Mathematics Day. He is considered to be a self-taught mathematician and one of the greatest Indian mathematicians of all time. During his short but impactful lifespan, Ramanujan worked on theorems that seemed impossible to solve. He is known for the work he did in the areas of continued fractions, Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series and functional equations of the zeta function. The goal of National Mathematics Day is to increase public understanding of the value of mathematics.

In order to celebrate the event at Lakhimpur Commerce College, a meeting was organized by the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics. It was chaired by Dr Lohit Hazarika, Principal of the college, who also delivered the welcome address. The objective of the meeting was explained by Deepjan Gohain, Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics, Lakhimpur Commerce College.

Tarun Kumari, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Lakhimpur Commerce College, graced the occasion as appointed speaker. She delivered a lecture on the extraordinary life and works of Srinivas Ramanujan, one of the greatest mathematicians that the world has ever produced. The meeting was attended by teachers, library staff and students of the college.
