National Nutrition Month, Matru Vandana Saptah inaugurated in Lakhimpur district

Poshan Abhiyan, Asom has initiated all necessary steps to observe the ‘Rashtriya Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month)’ throughout the month of September.

LAKHIMPUR: Poshan Abhiyan, Asom has initiated all necessary steps to observe the 'Rashtriya Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month)' throughout the month of September. Synchronizing with these steps, the month-long programme of the Rashtriya Poshan Maah was ceremonially inaugurated in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday.

On this occasion, a ceremonial programme was organized in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office under the auspices of District Social Welfare Department in association with the district administration. It was chaired by ADC Manorama Morang under the management of electoral officer Mustafa Selim Ahmed. In the same event, Matru Vandana Saptah, to be celebrated from September 1 to September 7, was also inaugurated. Rashtriya Poshan Maah aims to provide antenatal care, promote optimal breastfeeding, prevention from anaemia, among others, the Matru Vandana Saptah provides a cash incentive of Rs 5,000 to pregnant women and lactating mothers. This incentive is meant to provide some financial relief to women during pregnancy and mothers while attending to their infant child.

Attending the event, District Social Welfare Officer explained the significance of National Nutrition Month and Matru Vandana Saptah. He highlighted the programmes to be observed in this connection throughout the month. In addition to him, Child Development Project Officers Birinchi Borah, Nibha Hazarika, District Coordinator of Poshan Abhiyan, Priyanka Mohan Borah also spoke on the occasion.

ADC Manorama Morang encouraged the department concerned to put extra efforts with regard to eradicating Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in Children and anemia in adolescents during this year's 'Rashtriya Poshan Maah and 'Matru Vandana Saptah'. In the same event, some pregnant beneficiaries were given warm felicitation in addition to presenting them gifts.
