DONGKAMUKAM: The 56th edition of National Press Day was observed by media persons of both electronic and print media at Forest IB Tumpreng, West Karbi Anglong. The programme was organized by West Karbi Anglong District Press Club in collaboration with DIPRO Hamren West Karbi Anglong. The theme was 'Role of media in nation building'.
Attending as chief guest, Deputy Commissioner of West Karbi Anglong, Krishna Barua said, "In today's fast-growing world, media plays a very significant role." She urged the media to highlight issues like development, corruption and to create awareness in backward areas like West Karbi Anglong. Few of the senior journalists of West Karbi Anglong were also felicitated and they are Rongbong Terang, Nandaram Bordoloi, Mohan Teron, Hemari Rongphar, Joysing Terang and Dr Rajesh Kr Chouhan.
MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the countrywide celebration of National Press Day, the district administration and the office of the District Information and Public Relation Officer jointly organized a public function here at the Sanatan Dharmasabha premises.
The function chaired by Subhalakshmi Deka, District Development Commissioner (DDC), was addressed by Dr Kamala Kanta Borah, Principal of Mangaldai College, as the invited speaker. Delivering his speech on this year's theme of the day 'Role of Media in Nation Building', Dr Borah underscored the importance of establishing journalism as a dignified profession in terms of financial and social security.
"If we expect the journalists to work for the development of the country, their profession must be upgraded to a dignified with a justified salary and other financial benefits as recommended in UNDP," he said.
Referring to the challenges faced by the print media in recent times, he said that electronic or digital media could never be a hurdle for the print media. People accept electronic media only for 'breaking news' but for details, they always prefer the newspaper. According to the 2020-21 census, 1.45 lakh daily newspapers have been published in India.
Several other speakers, including Ramen Chandra Malakar, CEO, Darrang Zila Parishad, Jonti Deka, ADC, and senior journalist Bhargab Kumar Das also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the function began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by the welcome address by Monika Borgohain, Assistant Commissioner in charge of DIPRO. All the journalists present were greeted with a phulam gamosa and a letter of citation in recognition of their services.
NAGAON: Along with the rest of the nation, the district administration, in association with Nagaon Press Club, observed the National Press Day at the auditorium of Nagaon Press Club on Wednesday. During the day, a lecture on 'The role of media in nation building' was also organized. Noted budding Assamese literary critic and professor, Arindam Borkatoki was present as the keynote speaker while Deputy Commissioner, Nagaon, Narendra Kr Shah graced the occasion as the guest. The programme was chaired by Jadab Saikia, president of Nagaon Press Club. In the programme, the members of Nagaon Press Club as well as other press clubs of the district were felicitated by district administration as well as Nagaon Press Club.
Simultaneously, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya also observed the National Press Day at its auditorium this afternoon. On the occasion, a lecture was also organized where local media person Hareswar Borah was present as the keynote speaker.
Mrinal Kr Bora, Registrar of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya, delivered the welcome address and gave a brief note on the history of national media as well as media in Assam. Gauri Prasad Sarma, PRO of the university, anchored the entire session.
In his speech, keynote speaker Hareswar Borah spoke about the current media scenario in the State and regretted that due to various reasons or circumstances, the state media had lost public faith or credential. He urged the media fraternity to do self-analysis to redeem public faith on the media. Registrar of the university, Dr Mrinal Kr Bora informed that over 13 students from the university had cleared national eligibility test and JRF in the current year.
BISWANATH CHARIALI: Under the initiative of Biswanath District Information and Public Relations Department and in collaboration with Biswanath district administration, National Press Day was observed on Wednesday with the support of Biswanath Chariali Press Club. The theme of the day was 'Role of Media in Nation Building'. The programme was inaugurated by Amarjyoti Borthakur, chairman of Biswanath Chariali Municipality, by lighting a lamp at the Circuit House here while welcome address was delivered by Biswajit Saikia, Additional Deputy Commissioner and in-charge District Information and Public Relations Officer, Biswanath.
Participating as the keynote speakers at the function, senior journalists from Guwahati, Anirban Roy and Abhijit Dev presented a thoughtful and important discussion. The two speakers highlighted the specific issues and spoke through audio-visual media about the strong, impartial and bold steps to be taken by the media as well as journalists in nation building.
Four senior journalists of the district were specially felicitated on the occasion with a letter of felicitation, gamosa and a memento. It included Saurav Hazarika, Pulak Hazarika, Deepak Sharma and Bipul Kumar Dihingia.
BARPETA: Along with the rest of the country, at Barpeta Press Club also the National Press Day was observed. Flag hoisting was done by the president of Barpeta Press Club, Manoj Kr Pathak. On the other hand, Barpeta district administration also observed National Press Day in coordination with the District Information and Public Relation department at the Barpeta Deputy Commissioner's conference hall.
In this programme, veteran journalist and litterateur Akshay Kr Misra was felicitated. Addressing the meeting, Ayush Garg, Barpeta DC delivered a valuable lecture on the history of press. In this programme, Nabajyoti Ojah, District Development Commissioner, Manoj Sikaria, CEO, Barpeta Zila Parishad, ADC Gitashree Lachit and Khanindra Das were present. Various citizens, journalists and administrative officials were also present there.
At the Barpeta Road Press Club, in coordination with the Journalists' Union of Assam, the National Press Day was observed with various programmes. Akshay Kr Misra, noted journalist and litterateur, spoke on the topic 'Journalism under observation'.
DOOMDOOMA: Along with rest of the country, National Press Day (NPD) was observed at Sadiya under the auspices of the subdivision administration, Sub-division Information and Public Relation Department and Sadiya Press Club on Wednesday at the conference hall of the Sadiya Sub-divisional Officer (SDO).
A symposium on the topic 'Role of media in nation building' was organized with Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), SDO(Civil) in-charge Anupam Deka as coordinator. Senior journalist Dhiren Deka took part in the discussion as chief guest. On the other hand, Panchanon Hazarika, Assistant Professor, Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model (PNGBGM) College, and Akshyajyoti Mahanta, Assistant Professor, Bir Raghav Moran Government Model (BRMGM) College were two other participants to take part in the deliberations as guests of Honour.
In their speeches, the participants explained in detail the significance of the observance of the day in the context of prevailing domestic and international situations and underscored the need for media persons to discharge their duties sincerely for the well-being of the people and nation building. The symposium was also addressed by Samar Gogoi, a member of Sadiya Press Club, and other senior citizens present on the occasion. In the beginning, SDPRO, Assistant Commissioner Priyamjyoti Phukan explained the objectives of the meeting and felicitated the invited guests and the senior citizens. He also read out the message of the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmah to the people of Assam on the occasion.
LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the nation, National Press Day was celebrated in Lakhimpur on Wednesday to commemorate a free and accountable press and the founding of the Press Council of India (PCI) which began its role as a moral watchdog, to ensure the high standards of press being free from hindrance caused by any outside pressure or threats.
In order to observe the event, Lakhimpur district administration and the office of the District Information and Public Relation Officer (DIPRO) organized a public meeting-cum-symposium in association with North Lakhimpur Press Club (NLPC) in a befitting manner. it commenced with NLPC president Kumud Baruah in the chair. The meeting was inaugurated by former journalist Abu Sayeed Khan. DIPRO Mandira Chayengiya explained the objective of the programme and delivered the welcome address.
