National Press Day observed across Assam

TINSUKIA: The National Press Day was observed on Wednesday across Tinsukia district by media organisations and government departments. The Tinsukia District Journalist's Association (TDJA) observed the day with a day-long programme at India Club Margherita under the aegis of Margherita Journalists' Association with TDJA president Anuj Kalita in the chair. Two senior journalists, Jagat Changmai and Abhijit Kahatoniar delivered a lecture on 'Challenges to Journalism in Modern Times' in presence of journalists from 8 affiliated press clubs of Tinsukia district including former presidents of TDJA Himen Bhattacharjee, Arjun Baruah and Dr Rishi Das. 70 journalists from Tinsukia district were felicitated on the occasion. Earlier, TDJA general secretary Rana Jyoti Neog underlined the importance of the day.

The National Press Day was organized by the Margherita Sub-Divisional Civil Administration and office of SDIPRO, Margherita at the conference hall of the O/o SDO(C), Margherita. The programme began with the felicitation to SDIPRO Gurmeet Kaur Suri by newly appointed SDO Preeti Kumari followed by a brief speech by Kumari wherein she emphasized on the role of media in democracy and hoped that the administration and media will co-operate for the common benefit of the sub division.

Many senior journalists, former TDJA president Dr Rishi Das, TDJA general secretary Rana Jyoti Neog presented their views on the theme- 'Media in Nation building'. In sync with the day, the Margherita civil administration and office of SDIPRO, Margherita in association with the Margherita College also organized a sub divisional inter-college debate competition on this year's theme at Margherita College. Earlier, the prizes to the winners were distributed in the programme. Apart from officials from the administration, the event was attended by media persons of the region and few students from Digboi and Margherita College.

Tezpur: On the occasion of National Press Day, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University organized an interactive session, where Professor Sanjay Dwivedi, Director General of IIMC, New Delhi & PJ Baruah, noted journalist, graced the event as the keynote speakers.

Professor Abhijit Bora, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism delivered the welcome address, while the inaugural speech was delivered by Professor Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya, Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of the University.

Professor Sanjay Dwivedi spoke about the significance of press in our democracy and the importance of understanding the actual meaning of press. He explained that press stands for Public Related Emergency Social Service. He also spoke on democratization of media, media activism, right to information, prominence of print media in our country, the Indian discourse of communication and the role of media personnel in protecting Human Rights. He also explained the students the difference between views and reporting.

Speaking on the occasion, PJ Baruah elaborated the challenges of reporting in regional press. Sharing his journey as a journalist he laid stress on importance of accuracy and fact checking. He shared couple of his experiences from his long stint of journalistic career and urged the students to be careful of what they are reporting. He shared one incident where due to misreporting a Deputy Commissioner was killed. "Facts are very sacred and we cannot play with them", Baruah said.

BILASIPARA: Under the joint aegis of Bilasipara Sub-Divisional Information and Public Relation Office (SDIPRO) and the Bilasipara Sub-divisional administration, the National Press Day was observed at Bilasipara on Wednesday with Jagadish Brahma, Election Officer, Bilasipara in the chair. The programme was held in the premises of Dr BR Ambedkar Bhawan, Bilasipara. In this connection, a seminar was held on the topic 'Role of Media in Nation Building'. Principal of Chapar Ratnapith College Sheikh Hedayetullah was the chief guest while senior journalist Dayal Paul and Altap Hussain Ahmed attended the programme as distinguished guests. Sheikh Hedayetullah Dayal Paul, Altap Husain Ahmed and Sanjay Sarma addressed the meeting highlighting many grievances of the journalists. The journalists present in the meeting explained their experience in discharging their duties.

JAGIROAD: The Asomiya Natun Sambad Gosthi, Jagiroad, celebrated National Press Day at Jagiroad college auditorium. Addressing the session the renowned 'forest man' Jadab Payeng highlighted the role of media in democracy. He also urged upon the young generation to save the environment and called upon all to plant a tree on their birthday and make it a habit. 'Natun Sambad Gosthi' felicitated the popular forest lover with 'Aronya Ratna 2022' award.
