National Press Day: Senior journalists feted in Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur district

KOKRAJHAR: Along with the rest of the country, the National Press Day was observed by the Information and Public Relations department, BTC in association with Bodoland Journalist's Association and Gossaigaon Press Club at Habrubil community hall, Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday with a day-long programme.

Five senior journalists of BTC were felicitated and honoured with citations and mementos on the occasion. They were Baburam Basumatary, editor of Bodosa from Kokrajhar, Abu Bakkar Sidique, correspondent of Amar Asom, Chirang, Manohar Rajbongshi, Correspondent of Asomiya Pratidin, Mushalpur, Baksa, Utpal Deka, correspondent of Dainik Asom from Tamulpur and Dwipen Deka, correspondent of Amar Asom /Dy 365 from Khoirabari, Udalguri.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Wilson Hasda, EM of BTC said the media had vital role and responsibility for the society and the nation as well. He said a house would not be strong enough with three pillars and thus media is regarded as the 4th pillar of Indian democracy that strengthens the democratic system. He also said the freedom of press should be used in true sense.

According to Hasda, the media should focus on the real picture, but if a news story is exaggerated, society will be misled and suffer a negative impact. Earlier, the open discussion on the topic, 'Role of media in nation building' was inaugurated by Kokrajhar DC Varnali Deka. She also released the souvenir "Modati " while EM Wilson Hasda released the book "Akunson Somoy", a short story collection book written by journalist Malaya Deka.

LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur district administration and office of the District Information and Public Relation Officer (DIPRO) accorded warm felicitation to a total of 16 journalists of the district on the occasion of the National Press Day celebrated across the nation on Wednesday.

Eight retired journalists named Chandreswar Duworah, Harnul Rashid, Anil Dutta, Sapon Kumar Dutta, Bandhuram Pawegam, Abu Sayeed Khan, Nirupoma Borah and Kumud Saikia were felicitated as pioneer journalists of the district as appreciation for their dedicated services to the field of journalism and mankind. Moreover, eight more senior working journalists, aged over fifty, Kumud Baruah, Ratul Neog, Nabajyoti Sarmah, Mukul Saikia, Chitra Nath Gogoi, Gajen Hazarika, Diganta Sonowal and Alok Chamuah were also feted on the occasion. Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Sumit Sattawan, attending a programme held at North Lakhimpur Lakhimpur Press Club feted the journalists with gamosa, mementos and citations in the presence of DIPRO Mandira Chayengiya and other officials. While expressing their thoughts, the feted journalists extended thanks to the district administration and the office of the DIPRO for the appreciation of their works.
