National Science Day observed at Bodoland University in Kokrajhar

To commemorate the celebration of ‘Ramen Effect’ by Sir CV Raman and also to popularize science education and to inculcate the scientific temperament among students of various groups (from schools students to Ph.D scholars), parents and different stakeholders of BTR, Bodoland University joined the rest of the nation in celebrating National Science Day, 2021 recently.

KOKRAJHAR: To commemorate the celebration of 'Ramen Effect' by Sir CV Raman and also to popularize science education and to inculcate the scientific temperament among students of various groups (from schools students to Ph.D scholars), parents and different stakeholders of BTR, Bodoland University joined the rest of the nation in celebrating National Science Day, 2021 recently. The programme was organized jointly by eight departments under Faculty of Science and Technology, Bodoland University viz., Zoology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science and Technology, Biotechnology and Geography, with co-sponsorship of NTPC (Bongaigaon), Indian Oil (Bongaigaon), SBI (Balagaon Branch), Planters and Zenith India.

In this two-day programme, based on the theme of National Science Day, 2021 –'Future of STI: Impact on education, skill and work'- drawing and essay-writing competitions among schools students, science model and poster presentation among schools students, UG and PG students of colleges and university, quiz competition among schools students, UG and PG students of colleges and university were organized along with plantation drive on both the days.

The first day's programme began with plantation programme coordinated by Prof. Hillol Jyoti Singha (Head of the Department of Zoology) helped by Bablu Dey (Range Officer, Department of Social Forestry), Kokrajhar, where Vice-Chancellor of Bodoland University, Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh and AGM, NTPC, Bongaigaon, Anil Kumar Chawla took active part. The inaugural ceremony of the first day was led by Dr. Sharmistha Brahma Kour, Department of Biotechnology, BU.

To motivate students on the first day, brain storming and motivational session was taken by the Vice-Chancellor of Bodoland University, Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh and Anil Kumar Chawla, Additional General Manager-Human Resource, NTPC. The motivational session was followed by inauguration of science model and poster presentation by Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh and Anil Kumar Chawla. The inauguration of poster session was followed by drawing competition amongst school students with the theme of National Science Day, 2021. The drawing competition was followed by essay-writing competition.

On the second day, quiz competition was conducted among the undergraduate and postgraduate students by quiz master Nayanjyoti Borah and team. The session was followed by plenary session where welcome address was delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of Bodoland University, Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh. The keynote address was delivered by Subrata Mandal (CGM, NTPC, Bongaigaon), which was followed by an address by Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). Boro emphasized the importance of science education in day-to-day life and urged school students to become future scientists of India.

Apart from these, a complete session to motivate ignited young minds was taken by Padma Shri Jadav Payeng who emphasized the role of plants and plantation on human life. This session was followed by prize distribution in different categories. In the plenary session, vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Sujit Deka, Head of the Department of Geography. After the plenary session, plantation programme was conducted where dignitaries like Jadav Payeng, Subrata Mandal and Prof. Laisharm Ladu Singh took active part. Mass scale plantation in the university campus was done on Tuesday morning.

Altogether, 226 participants from 37 institutions took part in the programme. The programme has initiated to popularize science and technology in western Assam. All the faculty members and students of the eight departments of science and technology, along with the 37 participating institutes, took active part in the programme.
