National Seminar on 'Continuity and Change' held at H. P. B. Girls College in Golaghat

An ICSSR-sponsored national-level seminar on ‘Continuity and Change among the Ethnic Groups of North-East India’ was held at H. P. B. Girls’ College, Golaghat.

GOLAGHAT : An ICSSR-sponsored national-level seminar on 'Continuity and Change among the Ethnic Groups of North-East India' was held at H. P. B. Girls' College, Golaghat.

The Department of Sociology organised the seminar. Dr Bipul Ch. Bhuyan, the Principal of the college, chaired the inaugural session. At the same time, distinguished educationalist Prof. Jyoti Prasad Saikia, the Vice-Chancellor of the Birangona Sati Sadhoni Rajiak Viswavidyalaya, Golaghat inaugurated the seminar. Prof. Saikia spoke eloquently on the need for such seminars to understand the dynamic society of North East India.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Partha Pratim Borah, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Dibrugarh University. Dr Borah, in his talk, threw light on the emergence of the 'North East' region- both as a real and perceived category. He focused on the need to develop a broad social, political, economic and cultural approach to understand the continuity and changes in the region, which directly impacts the ethnic identity.

Dr Diganta Phukan, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Jorhat College and Dr Mayashree Goswami, Associate Professor, Department of Assamese, Sibsagar College, Joysagar, chaired the technical sessions. Many papers on issues ranging from law, language, literature, religion, food habits, indigenous rights to the impact of digitalisation on the ethnic groups of the region found a place in the seminar.

Dr Tapan Saikia, convenor of the seminar, thanked everyone for their kind cooperation towards the completion of the national seminar.
